If you previously tried out a beta version of i OS ahead of its full release, you should note that in order to get upcoming i OS releases you will need to remove the Apple configuration profile from your device.
The security specific release notes for i OS 11.2.2 contain the following information: Available for: i Phone 5s and later, i Pad Air and later, and i Pod touch 6th generation Description: i OS 11.2.2 includes security improvements to Safari and Web Kit to mitigate the effects of Spectre (CVE-2017-5753 and CVE-2017-5715).
Separately, Mac users will find updates to download for Safari 11.0.2 and mac OS 10.13.2 High Sierra Supplemental Update that also helps to patch the web browser against the Meltdown and Spectre security flaws.
We cover some important preparation steps first; but you can jump to the update process if you prefer. Use i Cloud or i Tunes to back up your i Phone, i Pad or i Pod touch.
This is a long shot, and fiddly, so you may want to skip this.
Apple's newest full version of the i Phone and i Pad software - i OS 11 - arrived on 19 September 2017, bringing dozens of cool new features.
But a number of smaller point updates have been rolled out since then, adding tweaks and important security fixes.
Alternatively, you can update i OS via i Tunes and save yourself the trouble; and i OS itself may offer to temporarily delete apps from your device to make room, then reinstall them after the update is complete.
If you're at 50% power or lower, you'll need to plug your device into a power source, and this isn't a bad idea in any case.
Update: Apple says the update is for Safari to address the Spectre vulnerability.
Available for: i Phone 5s and later, i Pad Air and later, and i Pod touch 6th generation Description: i OS 11.2.2 includes security improvements to Safari and Web Kit to mitigate the effects of Spectre (CVE-2017-5753 and CVE-2017-5715).
The update could relate to the recently disclosed Spectre and Meltdown flaws discovered in most computer processors including ones used in i Phones and i Pads.
